Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Guide

It’s that time of year again; heart-shaped chocolate boxes have made their way back on supermarket shelves, flowers are being ordered by the dozen and dates are being planned with loved ones either at home or over FaceTime.

Whether you love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is almost here. In the midst of a difficult winter rife with COVID restrictions, shorter days and chilly temperatures, we could all use a little excuse to celebrate.

It can be tricky to decide on the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Whether it’s for a friend, family member or spouse, we have compiled a list of the top four last minute eco-friendly gifts below. Happy gifting!

1.     Instead of buying a bouquet of flowers, why not gift your loved one with a plant or a packet of seeds? Many people don’t know that the cut-flower industry is heavily polluting. The production of flowers requires the use of agrochemicals which is extremely bad for the environment and pollutes the air, soil and water. By purchasing a plant or a packet of seeds instead of flowers, you will not only be helping the environment but also gifting your loved with something that will last much longer than flowers in a vase ever could.

2.     Thinking of purchasing a piece of jewellery for your significant other? Make sure to only purchase jewellery that is uses sustainable materials and is conflict free. Take Brilliant Earth, for example. Brilliant Earth is a jewellery brand that has sustainability at its core. Their diamonds are conflict free and the majority of their pieces are crafted from recycled precious metals. They are also a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council. Check out their incredible selection here.

3.     Cooking is one of the best ways to show someone that you love them. If you choose to cook or bake something this Valentine’s Day, whether it be dinner or dessert, get creative by making your food in the shape of hearts or adding red and/or pink food dye. Cooking or baking something for your loved one is not only a thoughtful gift but it also does not include excess packaging and transport that a take-away meal would require. Be sure to use no added preservatives and organic ingredients for the most healthy and sustainable option available!

4.     When all else fails, you can never go wrong with a thoughtful home-made card. Grab some paper and pens and write down all of the things that you love about your significant other. Or better yet, purchase a plantable seed card. When they are finished reading it, these cards can be planted in soil and grow into beautiful flowers! What’s not to love?
